Delivery

What is Engineering Intelligence?

Turning engineering data into decisions across delivery, quality, and experience.

Definition

Engineering intelligence is the practice of turning data from across the software lifecycle — version control, CI/CD, incidents, work tracking, and AI tools — into insights that help engineering leaders decide what to improve. It is broader than DORA, spanning delivery, quality, reliability, developer experience, and AI impact.

How it’s measured

It combines metrics (DORA, SPACE, flow, quality) with context and trend analysis, ideally with AI-written explanations and prioritized recommendations rather than raw dashboards.

What good looks like

Maturity looks like: metrics flow automatically from your tools, leaders get a clear "what to fix next," and decisions are evidence-based rather than anecdotal.

Why it matters

Dashboards full of numbers do not change behavior; intelligence does. The value is in turning signals into a short list of actions a VP of Engineering can act on — and proving whether investments (including AI) paid off.
